A Decluttered Workspace Makes You Far More Productive As An Artist

Practice Drawing This Draw-along.

Initial Letter A clean workspace makes you more productive. Decluttering your surroundings causes you to be less distracted, so it pays to clean up your workspace occasionally.

Tips:

1. Make sure everything has a place. That way, you won’t have to think, “where should I store this?” It helps avoid decision fatigue so you can keep cleaning your space for longer, and it also allows you to find things more easily later on.

2. If you have way too much stuff, then for each item, consider whether you would buy it now if you didn’t already have it (which is the same decision.) If the answer is no, then consider throwing it away.

3. To make an area an efficient space to work, pull everything out, then consider what you want to do in that space, how you want to move in and inhabit that space, and put items back where they are most handy. When putting things back into the area, consider how you will use the space, move through it, and where to place items so you can reach them most easily when needed.

Consider it a part of your drawing routine; do it when you need a break, and your workspace has become too cluttered.

Yours sincerely,
